The Roper Corporation traces its origins to 1874 as the Florence Machine Company of Massachusetts, a manufacturer of kerosene stoves. The Florence Machine Company acquired the E-Z Way Stove Works plant in Kankakee, Illinois in 1929. Production was concentrated on gas ranges until the start of World War II when its efforts were changed to producing 55mm shells and armor plating for tanks.
